Overview

The Introduction to Performance Design Short Course is designed as an introduction to the concepts and practice of costume, set and prop design. Whether you wish to nurture your interest in theatre design, pursue a career in this field, or gain portfolio content for further training in related courses, this programme can support you in your development. You will spend six days at the School’s design studios, under the guidance of Design Tutor Bronia Housman, as well as several visiting specialists.

Bristol Old Vic Theatre School offers a fun and nurturing environment in which to pursue your creative ambitions. The School is a world leader in theatre design training, and the support available from your tutors will help you develop your natural talents and confidence in performance design.

Highlights

• Gain an understanding of how to visualise narrative text and develop your inspiration into design concepts;

• Practice costume design with emphasis on choice of colours and materials to portray characters;

• Build a model box of a functioning performance space and bring it to life working at scale;

• Work hands-on and at real life scale with various materials in the School’s theatre spaces;

• Obtain guidance on how to put together design portfolios and how best to present your design work to different audiences.

This is a full-time Monday to Saturday course . Sessions run from 10:00 to 16:00. This course is taught in our design studios at Downside Road.

FAQs

WHAT TEXT WILL I BE WORKING ON DURING THE COURSE?

Prior to the course, you will be sent a selection of short texts to choose from. Your choice of text will then become the stimulus for your design work whilst on the course.

WHAT DO I NEED TO BRING?

We advise you to bring a sketchbook and drawing materials. All other consumables will be provided as part of the course.

CAN I KEEP THE DESIGNS I WORKED ON?

You will have the opportunity to take home any of the designs as well as the model box you create during your time with us.
