Les Liaisons Dangereuses

By Pierre Choderlos de Laclos

Adapted for the stage by Christopher Hampton

Directed by Jenny Stephens

The scandalous reputation of Laclos’s novel, first published in 1782, is based on its chilling portrayal of the mannered decadence and sexual cynicism of the French aristocracy in the last years of the ancient regime.

This sparkling adaptation gives a pitiless and searching portrait of the erotic diversions of aristocrats in pre-revolutionary France.

Tension builds up as two jaded and cynical ex-lovers , Valmont and the Marquise de Merteuil, plot and scheme with selfishness and cruelty to seduce others for their gratification or revenge.

The Marquise is incensed when Valmont falls in love, in spite of himself, with a virtuous married woman; but by plotting the downfall of her rival, she brings about an ultimate all-round destruction.

This is black comedy of the highest kind: edged with danger, replete with pain and forever reminding us that lives can be ruined with the merest flick of a well-turned phrase.
